Wales hosts the Closing Conference of the European Year 2012 in the United Kingdom
More than 200 people gathered in Cardiff on 29 November to celebrate the national closing conference of the European Year 2012 in the United Kingdom. The event was held at the National Museum in the presence of María Iglesia Gómez, Head of Unit DG SANCO European Commission; Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn, WLGA spokesperson for Equality and Ageing, and Ruth Hussey, Chief Medical Officer for Wales.

German elderly feel ten years younger and wish to maintain lifelong independence, according to new Generali Old-Age Survey
The group of 65 to 85-year-olds in Germany feel ten years younger on average than their actual age. The majority of them lead a very active, satisfying and varied life. They wish to maintain this life of self-determination for a lifetime if possible. Therefore most of them focus on the maintenance of health. These are the key findings of the first “Generali Old-Age Survey” conducted by the Polling Institute of Allensbach on behalf of the Generali Future Fund, an institution of Generali Deutschland.

The closing event of the European Year for Active Ageing 2012 in Romania on 27-28 November, organised by the Romanian Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Protection, regrouped all the players involved in the area of intergenerational exchange.

New Eurobarometer shows that the majority of Europeans believe that being over 55 is a disadvantage when applying for a job
The European Commission published on 22 November 2012 a new Eurobarometer which looks into attitudes and perceptions of Europeans towards discrimination, based on different grounds (gender, ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, age, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity).

The European Commission announces the winners of the European Year 2012 generations@school competition
In recognition of the European Day of Solidarity between Generations, the European Commission launched on April 29th the generations@school project and competition. The initiative, organised as part of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, focused on bringing students and older people together to engage in conversation about what it means to get older and how older and younger people can collaborate for a better life for all.

Finnish Government presents Act to ensure elderly people receive high-quality care services
The Finnish Government has adopted a Bill for an Act intended to ensure that elderly people will receive care and treatment according to their individual needs and on an equal basis nationwide through high-quality social welfare and health care services. The Act will specify the responsibilities of local authorities and guarantee better availability of necessary services for elderly people, among other things.

Senior-friendly Communities Austria 2012 awards given in Vienna
The Senior-friendly Communities Austria 2012 prizes were given on 7 November in Vienna during the National Closing Ceremony of the European Year 2012. These awards, organised for the firth time by Volkshilfe and the Pensioners Association of Austria, are given to communities that have distinguished themselves promoting initiatives and projects for the elderly.
