Poland approves the Government Programme for Senior Citizens Social Activity 2012-13
The Council of Ministers of Poland approved on August 24th the “Government Programme for Senior Citizens Social Activity” for the years 2012-2013. The aim of this comprehensive programme, effective from September 12th, is to improve the quality of life of older people through social activity and allow Polish society to benefit from the vocational potential of the elderly.

Senior regional meeting during the Tiszabercel Cultural Days in Hungary
About 500 seniors from 23 local and regional clubs in Hungary held on August 9th their annual open-air meeting in the village of Tiszabercel.

The lack of physical activity across the globe is a ´pandemic´, according to medical journal The Lancet
A report recently published in The Lancet describes physical inactivity as a "pandemic" and calls for steps to be taken worldwide. The paper, published in July, points out that physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of mortality across the globe, responsible for 5.3 million deaths, as many as smoking.

European Commission publishes a new volume of the Social Europe guide on demography, active ageing and pensions
The 3rd volume of the Social Europe guide recently published by the European Commission, entitled "Demography, active ageing and pensions”, gives an overview of the main demographic trends faced by Europe, such as ageing, a decrease in the working age population and declining fertility.

Senior volunteers contribute to the success of London 2012
The 2012 Olympics were made possible by up to 70,000 volunteers, or Games Makers, who gave up their time to help welcome the world to London.

More than 3,800 athletes participate in the 18th European Veterans Athletics Championships
The 18th European Veterans Athletics Championships (EVACS 2012) were inaugurated on August 15th in Zittau (Germany). Held for the first time in three countries (Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic), competitions will take place over a course of 10 days, until August 25.

The current rate of ageing in the European Union is economically unsustainable, according to researchers
The current rate of ageing in the European Union is economically unsustainable. This is the main policy message from the LEPAS collaborative project (Long-run Economic Perspectives on an Ageing Society), carried out throughout the last three years by researchers from Spain, Denmark, Germany and Austria.

Submissions open for the European Commission’s 3rd Access City Award, recognising accessible and age-friendly urban environments
The European Commission has launched the third edition of the Access City Award, which recognises and celebrates cities with over 50,000 inhabitants implementing exemplary initiatives to improve accessibility in the urban environment.
