Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in Rural areas

Rural poverty is an important aspect of European poverty, in particular since rural areas account for a large proportion of European territory and its population. In some Member States the poverty risk in rural areas is double that of urban areas.

Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in Rural areas

However, the specificities of rural areas have until now been neglected in the analysis of poverty in Europe.  There would still seem to be a lack of public awareness and commitment from the different strands of public institutions in addressing the issue of rural poverty.

The conference aims to highlight the need for enhanced cooperation with the different actors in the field of social policies, agricultural development, regional policy and statistics to fight poverty and social exclusion in rural areas.

The conference is organised - with the support of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour of Hungary - by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities in cooperation with the Directorates-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, Regional Policy and Eurostat.
