Frequently asked questions - Survivors’ benefits and death grants

Survivor's benefits

In general, the rules which apply to pensions for surviving spouses or orphans are the same as the ones applying to invalidity and old-age pensions.

In particular, survivors’ pensions have to be paid regardless of where the surviving spouse resides in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

Death grants

As for all other categories of benefits, social security institutions have to take account of periods of insurance or residence completed under the legislation of any other EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, when this is necessary to assess an entitlement to death grants.

The death grants will be paid by the institution of the country where the deceased person was insured, regardless of the EU country where the entitled persons live.
