The aim of SkillsDenmark is to generate talent, exposure and internationalisation within the Danish vocational educations. The Danish VET system is a dual system. The students spend up to tree thirds of their education in companies as an apprentice. The image of apprenticeship is not good, and the last 10 years VET has seen a decline in interest – especially from primary school pupils. The everyday life of an apprentice needs a better image and SkillsDenmark is a central part of this effort.
SkillsDenmark has created a separate competition targeting primary schools 8th grade to create a bigger interest for VET and for the national Skills championship. The primary school competition consists of different tasks that represent VET. Pupils have to whip up egg whites, assemble small furniture, connect wires, etc. as fast as possible. The primary school competitions first rounds are held in the fall at the VET schools and the best primary schools are invited to compete in the finale. The final is held at the national Skills championship in January where they can meet the best apprentices in the country.

SkillsDenmark has created a Facebook page where the apprentices in the main Skills competition portrait their everyday life in the companies and in school based training. They submit pictures from their mobile phones and write about their work day as an apprentice. SkillsDenmark has produced short videos where apprentices describe the best parts of their education.

The main target of the Skills primary school competitions are 8th grade student that are on the verge of choosing their future education.
The second target is teachers in primary schools. A significant obstacle in recruiting young people to VET is the lack of knowledge about VET and apprenticeships among primary school teachers.
