Xavier Trias is Mayor of Barcelona since 2011. He served as a pediatrician before he started a distinguished political career: Minister of Health in the Government of Catalonia (1988-1996), being responsible for developing the country’s Public Health Service, Minister of the Presidency (1996-2000) and leader and spokesperson for the Catalan Group in the Spanish Parliament (2000-2003).
Since being elected, Xavier Trias, has worked on fulfilling his three priorities as mayor of Barcelona: people’s social care and attention, especially those most vulnerable; making Barcelona work, with top quality services; and the city’s economic recovery and job creation.
Within a context of a deep economic and social crisis, the mayor has introduced new ways of carrying out politics in the City Council of Barcelona, leading a new model of action that is committed towards financial solvency, administrative simplification and excellence in public management.
Barcelona is a city of culture, knowledge, creativity, innovation and wellbeing. A city with a diversified economy open to the world, with traditional sectors such as retail, industry, services and tourism. A city which is also committed towards strategic economic sectors, such as mobile technologies, smart urban planning, the electric vehicle, the green economy, biomedicine, food processing, nautical industries and logistics; to make Barcelona, and its Metropolitan Area, the springboard for the economic recovery.
