Elif Bilgin is a junior at Koç High School. In addition to high school, for the last 7 years, she’s been attending to Istanbul Science and Art Center for the gifted students. She entered 2013 Google Science Fair with her project, “Going Bananas! Using banana Peels in the Production of Bioplastic as a Replacement of Traditional Petroleum Based Plastic.” representing Turkey. In June of 2013, she was first announced among the 90 finalists worldwide, and later in July, she was selected among 15 finalists . (According to Google, thousands of students, aged 14-18 from 120 countries entered this competition.)
Her project won Scientific American Magazine’s “Science in Action” award for $50.000 for being innovative, easy to put into action and reproducible in other communities. 15 finalists projects were voted by the people all over the world and Elif’s project got a tremendous number of votes and won the Voter’s Choice award of $10.000.
Her project draw a big attention from media all over the world, and she’s been invited to speak at Google Zeitgeist America 2013, Tedx Vienna and Tedx İstanbul. After high school, she hopes to study science and later become a doctor of medicine.
