Peer Review of the Maltese Research and Innovation system

The expert team met and discuss with the Maltese authorities the rationale and expectations for the peer review of the country's research and innovation system. In particular, discussions focused on the main dimensions of the peer review, i.e. the existing policies and instruments in place and the structure of the R&I system. In addition to the content of the peer review, the main practical details of its implementation - such as the work plan, the distribution of work among the members of the expert panel and the preparation for the first visit - were addressed.

Peer Review of the Maltese R&I system: the first fact-finding country visit to Malta aimed at identifying the research and innovation (R&I) challenges that Malta is facing. The expert panel met with policy-makers in charge of research and innovation policy as well as other relevant policies such as education and enterprise policy. The experts also held on-site meetings with researchers, research infrastructures managers, young entrepreneurs and innovators as well as business representatives.

The expert panel in charge of the Peer Review conducted a second visit to Malta. The objective of this visit was to discuss and validate with the stakeholders the preliminary findings. Based on the two country visits and existing evidence, the PSF experts delivered their analysis of the Maltese R&I system as well as their recommendations to the Maltese government for the next R&I Strategy.

The Chair of the PSF Peer Review panel presented the final report on the Maltese research and innovation system at an event in Kalkara. This was an opportunity for Malta's research and innovation authorities and stakeholders to discuss the expert panel's conclusions and recommendations.
