Born in Milan, 23 December 1961, he completed a degree in Physics from the University of Bari and in 1989, earned a PhD in Physics from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa.
He has been a researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart (Germany) and Visiting Professor at the Institute of Industrial Sciences of Tokyo University (Japan) and Virginia Commonwealth University (USA).
In 2000 he was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Lecce. He founded and directed the National Nanotechnology Laboratory (NNL) of the INFM in Lecce in 2001.
In 2005 he founded the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa, where he was Scientific Director.
In 2019 he was appointed Chief Technology & Innovation Officer of Leonardo.
He was awarded the titles of Alfiere del Lavoro in 1981 and Commander of the Italian Republic in 2006.
He is the author or co-author of over 1,100 publications in international journals and has over 100 patents to his credit.
Since 13 February 2021 he has been the Minister of Ecological Transition in the Draghi Government.
