Réunion receives advance of €5.3 million from EU Solidarity Fund for cyclone Garance recovery

Today, the Commission paid an advance of €5.3 million from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to France to ease the financial burden caused by the disastrous cyclone called Garance that hit the French region of Réunion in February 2025.

The tropical cyclone brought severe winds, intense rainfall which led to significant damage to infrastructure, public buildings, private homes, businesses and agricultural areas. 5 people lost their lives, and more than 265 thousand people were affected, leaving widespread and severe destruction across the island.

Thanks to the EUSF, France has now received crucial EU support to address the aftermath of the disaster.

The advance payment follows the application for EUSF support submitted by France on 23 May 2025. The advance payment from the EUSF will provide budgetary relief at a time when it is most needed. The final amount of EUSF support will depend on the assessment of the application and on budgetary availability.
