Protecting lives and property from floods near Slovenia’s Gradaščica river basin

More than 180 anti-flood measures are to be built during a project to strengthen flood defences in Slovenia’s Gradaščica river basin. The first phase of the project will ensure protection for nearly 18 000 inhabitants and 3 000 buildings on an area of around 6 km². The first phase of this two-phase project is funded by the EU. Stage A of phase 1 will significantly improve flood safety in the south west of the capital, Ljubljana, while stage B of phase 1 will focus on the municipality of Dobrova-Polhov Gradec.

New motorway means a more connected Slovenia

The Motorway A4: Slivnica – Gruškovje: Draženci – International Border Crossing Gruškovje project is building 13 km of new motorway in Slovenia’s Vzhodna Slovenija region, resulting in reduced congestion, a cut in travel times and less pollution.

Sofia's metro system undergoes new expansion

Public transport in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, is getting a big boost with the construction of the city's third metro line. The first two phases of its development, which are being co-financed by the EU Operational Programme Transport and Transport Infrastructure for the period 2014-2020, are already underway. In the period 2014-2020, the completion of Phase 1 and 2 of Line 3 is expected to add 12 km of lines and 12 metro stations as well as new 20 new metro trains. Upon completion the Sofia metro network should reach 52 km of lines and 47 stations by 2021. The total EU co-financing for Line 3, Phase 1 and 2 amounts to 454.8 million Euros.

New section of expressway built in Poland's Mazovia province

EU funding has contributed to the construction of a 22 km section of the S7 expressway from the municipality of Orońsko in Mazovia province, central Poland, to the border with Świętokrzyskie province to the south. The road forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network's Baltic-Adriatic corridor and also forms a section of European route E77, which runs from Kaliningrad to Budapest via Gdańsk, Warsaw and Kraków.

Strengthening Poland’s position in a pan-European rail network

Phase two of an EU-funded project renovates a 15 km section of the E30/C-E30 rail track between Kraków and Rzeszów in Poland to complete the upgrading of 138.7 km of track linking some of the most important cities in the south of the country with destinations further afield, such as Berlin and Dresden. The improved link will contribute towards stimulating pan-European trade and making the rail network a fast and attractive option for passengers and freight.

Strengthening the spine of Poland’s modern rail network

Phase two of an EU-funded project will complete the renovation of sections of a vitally important rail line connecting the Polish capital of Warsaw with the southern city of Kraków. The project is crucial to ensuring that Poland has a modern rail system, ensuring that more people and goods are transported efficiently and at greater speed along the network.
