German Speaking Community of Belgium - ESF

Programme description

With a strong emphasis on social measures, ESF spending focuses on education and training for young people and those facing multiple obstacles to finding work.

The ESF operational programme (OP) for the German-speaking Community of Belgium aims to complement the regional development plan while giving space to social innovation. The EUR 22 million OP aims to improve the employability of groups facing particular obstacles to finding work, such as the long-term unemployed, older jobseekers and those with disabilities. The OP also targets increased job security for workers.

The OP has three priorities for investment:

  • Personalised guidance and training opportunities will help groups, such as the long-term unemployed and women jobseekers, to improve their employability and chances of finding a job.
  • Social inclusion projects will target people facing multiple obstacles to successful social integration. Some 50% of total funding will be devoted to individual guidance, training and qualifications to help this group make the transition into suitable work.
  • Education, training and lifelong learning will be supported. Projects will target employment sectors facing skills shortages. Youth employment will be boosted with actions to reduce early school leaving and support young people in making the transition from school into working life.

Overall, the OP will directly help some 5300 individuals to increase their qualifications and skills, and improve their employability. Over the long term, the OP will contribute to a more skilled labour force and increased social cohesion.
