Rapid rail in Castilla y Léon

In order to ensure continuity on the Madrid-Valladolid high-speed railway line, a high-speed rail track will be introduced between Venta de Baños, Palencia and León.

The high-speed line, which will stretch for approximately 93 km, will also ensure strong connections to the north and north-west of Spain, and in particular the access routes to León and Asturias. Travel times between Madrid and León will be reduced by up to approximately two hours, compared to those on the current conventional line.

Stage one: preparing the way

The planned line, which is part of an important axis for high-speed rail interoperability on the Iberian Peninsula, will have a double electrified track and an International Union of Railways (UIC) international gauge.

The project has been broken down into four separate stages, with this particular portion of funding covering only the first. This stage includes measures to prepare for construction such as: moving earth, structures and tunnels, ensuring right of way, constructing cross-connections to guarantee the lines’ permeability to roadways and carrying out the corresponding drainage works.

The overall project has been divided into eight sections: Grijota-Becerril Campos; Becerril Campos-Valle Retortillo; Valle Retortillo-Pozo Urama; Pozo Urama-Río Cea; Río Cea-Bercianos Real Camino; Bercianos Real Camino-Santas Martas; Santas Martas-N601 and finally, N601-Palanquinos.

A fast-track to success for Castilla y Léon

The inhabitants of the provinces crossed by the high-speed line will benefit from the project on a number of levels.

By reducing travel times so dramatically between Madrid and León, the project will greatly contribute to the socio-economic structure of the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León while the railway will be integrated into the cities of Palencia and León, encouraging the re-development of town planning in those cities. The project will also have a significant impact on the region in terms of employment, with 1 847 jobs being directly created during the implementation phase.

Rail traffic safety will also be increased as advanced technologies in traffic management and automated train driving systems are adopted.

Additionally, the project will contribute to environmental sustainability by increasing the attractiveness of rail as a transport option and substantially reducing fuel consumption, greenhouse emissions, noise and air pollution, etc.
