New tunnel improves access and reduces city centre traffic

The construction of a new road tunnel in Santa Cruz, Tenerife improves links with the port area while reducing the amount of traffic coming into the city centre. In addition, all motorists using the Via Litoral route along the Anaga coast look set to enjoy better access to Santa Cruz thanks to a project which also improves the sea front’s appearance and environment.

The ‘cut and cover’ tunnel is about 500 metres long and runs from the start of the Avenida Francisco La Roche to Tenerife’s main council building. The route enables heavy traffic passing through the city centre to be directed underground, thereby leaving a large car-free space which can be converted into an area for leisure and recreation. Around 40 000 vehicles a day are expected to use the new tunnel.

Two-lane design

Construction of the tunnel provides for two-lanes moving in each direction along with the reinstatement of all services affected by the work, including drainage. The tunnel is equipped with numerous control and safety features for ventilation, fire protection, lighting, communications and signing. About 1.2 km of regional road is also being constructed as part of the project. Above the tunnel, the highway provides access to an underground car park. In addition, parking lanes are provided along the side of the road, as is a replacement cycle path.

This project is generating about 81 jobs during the implementation phase and 46 posts upon completion. It is part of a wider overall scheme to construct the Via Litoral coastal road. The tunnel may be extended in the future, both to the north and south of the city.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Vía Litoral en Santa Cruz de Tenerife (tramo 1. Fase a Barranco de Santos Plaza de España)” is EUR 52 329 037, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 26 164 519 from the Operational Programme “Canary Islands” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Reduction of additional costs which hinder the development of the outermost regions”.
