New railway station – pivotal link for transport networks
A modern railway station for various train systems (urban, regional and long distance) is to be built in Barcelona, with the aim of providing easy passenger interchange from one system to the other.
The new centre will be located in Prat de Llobregat, near Prat International Airport, Barcelona. This is an ideal location for linking up with the many networks in the area, including long distance high-speed rail, the Metro (L1and L9) and air transport. By 2013, the number of potential users per year is expected to have increased from 1.4 million (2010) to 8.4 million.
Rational use of transport
The underlying objective of this major project is to increase the use of public transport and encourage rational use of private cars. To help achieve this, the station will have a large underground parking area available, making it easier to switch from private cars to public transport. By 2025, 17 million people are expected to be using the station, among them those travelling on the high-speed railway line Madrid-Barcelona-French border. The project is also expected to contribute to redeveloping an old, unused industrial area and boost employment, with 940 direct jobs created during the construction phase.
The project is in line with the European strategies set out in the White Papers: “Revitalising the railway” and “A high-speed passenger network”. As an intermodal centre, where different transport modes connect, the project contributes to the strategy “Intermodality for people”. Finally, the new centre contributes to the strategy of “Rationalising urban transport”, given its location in an urban area, connecting urban transport modes such as the underground, buses, taxis and private cars.
Cashing in on green approach
The new centre will help decrease the use of road transport and the levels of environmental pollution. The three key targets are accessibility, sustainable mobility and saving energy resources. Studies estimate that €2.91 million worth of journey times will be saved, alongside €1.04 million in energy savings, contributing to a cleaner and more efficient transport system and quality of life for locals. In addition to this, fewer accidents should result in savings equivalent to about €700 000.
