Footwear firm seeks a step change in logistics
One of the world’s leading shoe manufacturers has set its sights on expansion by introducing a sophisticated new system for storage and distribution at its headquarters in Spain.
The high-tech system will be integrated into a new logistics centre owned and run by Tempe SA, a member of Spain’s Inditex Group, in the city of Elche/Elx. Construction of this system is expected to create some 300 jobs.
Spain’s footwear heartland
Tempe SA designs, manufactures and distributes footwear and accessories for the Inditex Group. These products are sold worldwide through some 5 400 stores and online. The company is based in the city of Elche/Elx, famous for its numerous footwear firms, some 20 km south-east of Alicante.
Tempe recently erected a huge new centre in the business park area of Elche/Elx. Featuring the latest logistics and storage systems, this will enable the company to continue growing commercially.
A key goal is for the company to become more reactive and flexible and to increase production capacities. Under this new project, part funded by the EU, the company will build an integrated storage and operating system with a sorting carousel. This will be linked to an enhanced and automated storage system, operating the containers in various warehouses. The whole system will be run by a software management program, designed to follow each product throughout its lifecycle – from creation through to the dispatch to stores.
Automated storage and distribution
The new storage and distribution system will be sited in a centre with a total built area of around 59 600 square metres, on an enormous site of over 90 000 m2. Up to 13 700 m2 will be given over to the silos and around 45 900 m2 to warehousing. There will also be 200 car-parking spaces and several green areas.
Specially adapted for the company’s activities, the new system will make the dispatch of products to stores more effective and efficient. Its distribution and storage technologies will include an integrated management process, with information and communication technology to ensure real-time monitoring and the physical organisation of products throughout the cycle. Once up and running, the system will handle 600 packages every hour and around 930 packages an hour in the various warehouses.
