Extension of Bucharest Metro Line 5

Investment in the construction of the Metro Line 5 will enable the public transport network to reach new neighbourhoods in Romania's capital city, providing easier access to the city centre for the people who live there and reducing road traffic.

Additional tools

Bucharest's metro system is being extended to reach the Drumul Taberei area, including Valea Ialomiţei and Râul Doamnei, with the construction of a new line stretching to the neighbourhood from the existing Eroilor station.

It aims to shorten the time it takes to travel on this route by about 21 minutes. This is an important benefit to the 335 000 residents of Drumul Taberei and the surrounding areas – of which more than half are expected to use the line. Indeed, this project will contribute to providing them with easier access to central Bucharest and the important opportunities the city provides, such as employment, education and health services.

At the same time, it should reduce congestion on the roads, making travel easier for drivers.

Metro Line 5

The line being extended, Metro Line 5, has a length of 6.7 km, and includes 10 metro stations as well as a depot at its western end. Each train will have six cars and are expected to travel at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Metro line 5 represents the fifth metro corridor in Bucharest, and is increasing the total length of the network from 69 km to about 76 km.

The project is creating an estimated 48 jobs during the implementation process, and 1 200 new jobs upon completion.
