New electric vehicle-charging systems help develop sustainable transport

Magnum Cap's New Park Charge Solutions project has developed a range of electric charging system prototypes for transport based on renewable energy. The project's innovation, research and technological development is contributing to wider deployment of electric vehicles, which should benefit the environment by reducing exhaust emissions.

" The New Park Charge Solutions project was extremely important for the company, as through it we were able to rapidly release a complete, high-quality product line onto the market. At the same time, we were able to increase the company's international presence, and we now do business in Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, Finland, Italy, Macau, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Spain, among others. "

José Henriques, Project Coordinator

Within the project, Magnum Cap has developed four prototypes: (1) a two-wheel charging system; (2) a normal charging system; (3) a home charging system; and (4) a quick charging system. The company has strengthened several partnerships, including with Centre for Excellence and Innovation in the Automotive Industry (CEIIA), an engineering centre that has helped with the design process so as to ensure the products' marketability, as well as numerous other companies that provided components and specialised services to complement Magnum Cap's own expertise.

As a result of the project, new opportunities have opened up for Magnum Cap regarding the supply of electronic vehicle-charging products, remote charge monitoring and management tools and a range of related services. The project has also created ten jobs, which should enable the expertise acquired under the project to be built upon further and lead to new business opportunities.

New Park Charge Solutions has helped to promote the Centro region as an important centre for electronic vehicle technology with a view to attracting foreign investment. Magnum Cap has increased its international presence, now exporting 50 % of its products, and building a network of trading partners in 13 countries.

Recognition from leading vehicle constructors

The prototypes have been certified by leading electronic vehicle constructors, which have carried out integration tests at the Magnum Cap premises. Magnum Cap has also been invited to participate in the development of the charger for Volar-e, an electric race car financed by the European Commission with the aim of promoting electric vehicles.

Magnum Cap has also developed prototypes on a modular basis, thus allowing each module to be used as an individual product, and allowing the components to be marketed separately. Some of the components are in demand in the energy sector; such as vehicle-to grid-chargers or energy storage systems

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “New Park Charge Solutions” is EUR 1 018 788.50, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 369 648.07, from the Operational Programme “Centro”, for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
