Upgrade of Okęcie – Radom railway line to improve passenger transport

Upgrading the line between Okęcie and Radom and improving the existing Radom station will boost passenger rail transport and environmental benefits.

The project will modernise 49 km of track in total on the No 8 (Warszawa Zachodnia – Kraków Główny Osobowy) track between Okęcie and Radom, in order to improve the market share of rail in the passenger travel and freight sectors.

Benefits for the community

By improving the line via this and a second project, to be implemented at a later date, passenger and freight use of the track will be increased. The improvements will include removing cable collisions and the construction of local control centres. Animal crossings and ecological corridors will also be built. The improvements will increase the weight capacity of the line and speeds at which passengers and freight may be transported.

Infrastructure investments

Upgrades will be performed on track systems, including the track bed, drainage, and power supply. In addition, service roads, new or improved command-control and signalling systems, and station improvements will be built, with estimated savings of EUR 12 321 654 per year in passenger transport times. Revenue generated from track access charges will make the project self-funding.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Modernisation of railway line no. 8 section Warsaw Okęcie - Radom (LOT A, B, F)” is EUR 428 684 241, of which the EU’s Cohesion  Fund is contributing EUR 239 362 559 from the Operational Programme “Infrastructure and Environment” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period, priority axis VII "Environment-friendly transport".
