Strengthening road network connections in south-eastern Poland

The construction of a new section of the S17 expressway is set to boost the social and economic development of Lubelskie (Lublin Province), whilst enhancing the road transport network regionally and further afield.

The infrastructure covered by this major project includes a 66.83 km stretch of road on the E372 Warsaw-Lublin-Zamość-Lviv road. This runs in a south-easterly direction from the town of Sielce (close to Kurów) through to the city of Lublin, which it bypasses, and ends at the start point of the existing Piask bypass. The project includes Lublin Province and the Puławski, Lubelski and Świdnicki districts.

Toll-charge road

Once completed, the public road will feature either two or three lanes in each direction. It has been designed to carry traffic at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

Additional infrastructure under construction includes intersections, bridges, feeder roads as extensions of the expressway, four service areas, as well as reconstruction of other roads intersecting with this expressway. Smaller connecting roads are also being built, among them roads that provide access and service to the S17, and bus bays.

Further work comprises the reconstruction and securing of technical infrastructure. In line with national and European legislation, wildlife crossings, and culverts are being integrated into this road, alongside environmental protection and road safety facilities.

Faster, safer traffic

The Kurów-Lublin-Piaski section of expressway S17 should improve transit traffic regionally by diverting traffic from urban areas and limiting access to these roads by local traffic. Similar benefits are expected at national level, as well as internationally, since this road stretch forms part of the trans-European transport network, known as the TEN-T programme, and notably connects with the city of Lviv in nearby Ukraine. Road safety for motorists and pedestrians is certain to be enhanced too, as traffic will only be able to merge at graded intersections.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Construction of the expressway S17 on the Kurów-Lublin-Piaski section” is EUR 854 235 734, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 591 599 261 through the "Road and air TEN-T network" priority of the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 programming period.
