The present phase will see the installation of state of the art telecommunications systems and infrastructural improvements along a 78 km section of railway. The project’s objectives are to improve passenger and freight transport efficiency, increase user safety and volume, and improve environmental conditions along the section.

Rigorous enhancement

As part of a broader project to upgrade sections of the trans-European Transport Network, this project will see a rigorous enhancement of the existing network in the Mazoweiekie and Lubelskie provinces. New tracks and power contact lines will be placed in a number of stations along the rail section, while ancillary infrastructures such as bridges, underpasses, and platforms are to be constructed and enhanced.

A state of the art control-command system and a new fibre-optic telecommunications network are expected to significantly improve time efficiency and user safety. Central to the project’s environmental focus are new sound-insulating systems and anti-vibration solutions, while specially constructed animal crossings and pathways are designed to preserve the local eco-system.

The network improvements will support passenger train speeds of 160 km/h and freight train speeds of 120 km/h. It is hoped that the time-efficiencies stemming from this will increase user volumes on the network, providing an economic boost to local communities.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Modernisation of railway line E 20/CE 20 on section Siedlce – Terespol, stage II” is EUR 163 700 762, of which the EU’s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 82 696 478 from the Operational Programme “Infrastructure and Environment” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period, under the priority axis VII "Environment-friendly transport".
