New section of major road benefits all users

Constructing a section of National Road No 16 in north-east Poland should mean quicker, safer journeys for local people, tourists, and hauliers alike. The 26.31 km stretch of highway between Barczewo and Borki Wielkie will be able to cope with current and projected traffic volumes.

Additional tools

National Road No 16 runs across much of Poland – from Dolna Grupa in the north, through the city of Olsztyn, and onto Ogrodniki near the border with Lithuania. Work on this section has been designed to improve traffic flow and travel times while providing better connections between regional centres and local towns. Everyone living in the Warmińsko–Mazurskie region – along with freight companies and visitors – benefits from the project as it improves accessibility to the road transport network and road safety.

In addition to providing the new stretch of main road, the programme of work includes three interchanges, 15 bridges, three rural access roads, and three pedestrian crossings. The scheme also includes eight wildlife crossings, acoustic barriers, drains, and a storm-water system.

Safety first

Monitoring of environmental factors such as noise, pollution, and water quality helps to ensure measures can be taken so that the road does not have a negative impact on nearby residential and agricultural areas. Plus, safety audits will be carried out when the road first becomes operational, which will be followed by periodic road safety inspections.

It is estimated that the project’s implementation phase will generate about 1 530 jobs.
