Cutting emissions will mean a cleaner atmosphere

The city of Warsaw and the surrounding region can look forward to better air quality thanks to a project which will cut sulphur dioxide emissions from a local power station. Building the wet flue-gas desulphurisation (WFGD) plant will also help Poland meet its environmental obligations.

The WFGD plant will process emissions of sulphur dioxide produced by five boilers at the Elektrociepłownia Siekierki power station, which is the largest energy producer in the region. The station is run by project beneficiary, Vattenfall Heat Poland S.A.

The power station will be provided with various systems and installations necessary for the running of the new WFGD plant, which will be known as absorber No 1. Work will include the construction of a channel to carry undesulphurised exhaust gas from the boilers to the absorber. A new ventilator and heater will also be installed, along with a channel for purified flue gas.

Funding has been set aside to purchase essential machinery and equipment that will be required for the loading and unloading of powdered limestone and for the preparation of sorbents – both key ingredients in the WFGD process. The investment will also pay for machinery that can purify and remove sewerage from the new plant, and equipment for the removal of sludge from wastewater treatment plants.

Clear benefits

The method for desulphurisation consists of absorbing sulphur dioxide in an aqueous suspension of limestone powder. The reaction produces insoluble products which can be compacted and then stored or sent for disposal.

Reducing the amount of sulphur dioxide entering the atmosphere will help Poland to fulfil strict environmental standards that have been binding since January 2008. Thanks to the new plant, sulphur dioxide emissions from the Elektrociepłownia Siekierki station should initially be reduced by 22.7 % per year. This figure will rise to 45.3 % once Vattenfall Heat Poland has completed its entire sulphur dioxide reduction programme.

Total and EU funding

The project "Construction of a Wet Desulphurisation Plant for boilers K5, K6, K7, K10 and K11 at Elektrociepłownia Siekierki" has a total eligible budget of EUR 46 909 139, with the EU's European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 5 565 604 for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
