Madrid metro Line 11 opens up the suburbs

Work on extending one of Madrid’s metro lines, has not only improved the quality of life of the local population, but it also represents an important factor in boosting the economy and enhances the attraction of the region when it comes to drawing in new companies.

The Community of Madrid has recently expanded Metro Line No.11 from La Peseta Station, in the Carabanchel Urban Development Area (PAU) of the city, to the Leganés La Fortuna district on the outskirts of the city.

The aim of the project has been to expand the existing Metro Line No.11 by 3.2 km to Barrio de la Fortuna, in the south-west of Madrid. This extension includes new rail tracks, digging a tunnel and building a new metro station at La Fortuna, as well as developing a recreational park. It was implemented by the public company MINTRA (Madrid Infraestructura del Transporte).

Commuting made quicker

Works included the infrastructure design and the construction of a tunnel and metro station including halls, access points, technical premises, decoration and electrical and ventilation devises, as well as emergency exits. The extension of Line No.11 as far as La Fortuna, now allows residents of the neighbourhood, about 15 000, to get into the centre of Madrid in under 15 minutes and from there, transfer to the rest of Madrid’s metro network from Plaza Elíptica Station.

Work on the new extension began in 2007 and the 3.2 km of track was opened to the public on 5 October 2010 by Esperanza Aguirre, President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid. With the completion of the project, transport demand will have shifted from road to the metro, reducing the numbers of road accidents, and lowering noise and air pollution levels and therefore greenhouse gas emissions. It is also expected that the project will create 1 240 jobs per year, including both direct and indirect employment.

Park and bike

The project also included reconstruction of the Serafín Díez Antón Park, with an area of almost 31 200 m², directly above the La Fortuna station, and thereby enhancing the quality of life of the residents of the neighbourhood. The park includes recreational amenities, such as walks, sports areas and a children’s play area. There is also provision for biking, facilitating access to station entrances for cyclists. These facilities include three bicycle parking areas and 250 metres of “bike lane”.

The reconstruction of the park has subsequently given residents the opportunity to enjoy a new modern quality leisure and meeting place. Prior to the extension of the metro line, the area suffered from physical exclusion and associated social problems, as a dormitory town; thus connecting the southern neighbourhood of La Fortuna to the Madrid metro system will not only have a positive economic impact but is having an important social impact as well.
