Modernising water infrastructure in Walcz

By modernising its water supply and sewerage disposal infrastructure, the town of Walcz in Poland hopes to improve service standards, reduce its environmental impact and increase connection rates.

The water and sewage management project outlined for Walcz includes the modernisation of the water treatment plant and the waste water treatment plant, as well as the reconstruction and extension of its sewer network.

Treating water and waste water systems

Located in Poland’s north-western Waleckie Lakeland area, Walcz has a total combined population of 26 029 inhabitants. Connection to water supply and wastewater services is high for the town, at 98% and 97% respectively. The project seeks to slightly increase connection rates, improve service standards and reduce the environmental impact of the plants and sewer network.

Through this project, the town will benefit from a modernised wastewater treatment plant with improved capabilities for treating sludge as well as a reconstructed and extended sewer network providing household connections to a further 662 inhabitants. Approximately 60% of the existing network will undergo reconstruction works. The town’s water treatment plant will also be modernised and installed with monitoring and automatic control systems, while the water supply system will be extended to serve an additional 245 inhabitants.

Overall, the project will see 32.7 km of the existing sewer system and 7.1 km of the water supply network reconstructed and 4.3 km of the sewer network extended as well as a replacement sludge aeration system installed.

Benefiting the environment for a better quality of life

One of the main aims of modernising the infrastructure is to reduce the environmental pollution load discharged from the system and thus improve the local environment and the general quality of life in the area.

The project will reduce the adverse impact caused by the poor condition of the existing sewer and storm water systems on the environment, particularly on groundwater (a drinking water source) and on the Radun lake.

Apart from the environmental benefits, the project also aims to extend service coverage and to improve the operational efficiency and effectiveness of drinking water and wastewater treatment. While doing so, it will also provide five new jobs in the area during the project implementation stage.
