Modernisation of Łódź railway brings economic and environmental benefits
Investment in the railway system in the Łódź conurbation is increasing the number of passengers using train transport while reducing CO2 emissions, air pollution and energy use, as well as contributing to the economic development of the region by increasing mobility.
The investment includes purchasing 20 units of modern rolling stock and also the construction of a technical facility to service them near the Łódź Widzew railway station. The new trains will reduce travel time between the conurbation and Łódź city centre to less than 45 minutes – a 25 % decrease from the current travel time.
Improving mobility, new support and repair facilities
The project supports the economic development of the region, as it allows residents of the conurbation to enjoy increased mobility. It is expected that 994 000 additional passengers per year will use the modernised rail services.
The 20 electric traction units are up to 52 metres in length, carry a minimum of 200 people, reach speeds of 160 km/h, contain a minimum of 120 seats, and have an annual expected mileage of about 150 000 km. The new modern units will bring significant envionmental benefits to suburban rail transport in Łódź by reducing CO2 emissions, air pollution and energy-intensity of train transport.
New infrastructure at the technical facility include an inspection and repair hall, track system, pre-treatment system for wastewater, station master’s lodge, technical underground passages for workers, and an internal road network.
