Building a capital route through the capital of Poland

With the building of the metro line II in Warsaw, an innovative urban transport will be provided to around 2 million commuters and visitors with a comfortable and environmentally friendly way of travelling around Warsaw.

A new metro line through Warsaw is bringing clean, fast and modern infrastructure to workers, citizens and tourists in Poland’s celebrated capital. A new metro through a vital urban neighbourhood has been designed to have minimum impact on the environment while bringing maximum benefits to passengers. The project will include planning and construction of an entire central section on this underground city line, along with the preparatory work needed to expand the route still further. Investors are also paying for 35 six-carriage single compartment trains, meaning a total of 210 metro carriages: brand new rolling stock to take passengers through the brand new metro.

Getting to the heart of Warsaw

The line travels through Warsaw's Ursynów district, a large and vibrant community in the city. Ursynów is the city’s third largest district, with a young and thriving population. Built up largely since the emergence of democracy in the late 1980s, Ursynów is one of the fastest-growing parts of Warsaw. The metro line itself will go through the Kabaty and Moczydlo neighbourhoods, linking urban apartment blocks with green, wooded areas – bringing together domestic, professional and cultural venues.

A thoroughly modern metro

Works for the new metro include an entire underground line, along with sections of the broader network and buildings. To get the most out of the new infrastructure whilst keeping the environmental impact to a minimum, the design work for the project includes geological works, clearly defined zones to monitor and control the impact on nearby buildings, and analysis of the likely effect on people and constructions – as well as full cataloguing of green areas and buildings along the route.

Completed infrastructure includes seven metro stations, as well as associated tunnels, haulage tracks, a control station, and the necessary reconstruction of local network sections. The project was designed to promote passenger safety along the entire line, with a fire-extinction system and alarms built into the design and training for drivers and technical staff included from the start.

Total and EU funding

The project "Warsaw metro II line – preparatory works, project and construction of the central section together with the purchase of the rolling stock" has a total eligible cost of EUR 1 478 555 006, with the EU Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 776 553 628 from the “Infrastructure and Environment” operational programme for the period 2007-2013 under the priority “Environment-friendly Transport.”
