Building new opportunities for Lithuanian science

This project will see Vilnius University team up with four partners to develop a National Centre for Physical and Technological Sciences (NCPTS). The centre will concentrate on three areas of research: laser technology, material science and nanotechnology, and semiconductor physics and electronics.

The project works include the construction and fitting out of a cutting-edge R&D centre covering a surface area of 25 000 m2, providing a home for leading research teams.

United scientific forces

Vilnius University and its four partners, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, the Semiconductor Physics Institute, the Institute of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics, will build the NCPTS in an effort to improve the existing R&D infrastructure and advance the internationally recognised work carried out in these organisations by local scientists. A total of 40 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the project; a further 126 positions long-term.

The NCPTS is being built on a brownfield site adjacent to the existing premises of two of the partners: Vilnius University and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. A plot area of 62 ha has been earmarked for the development, with detailed plans already drafted and approved. The site also includes a 2.4 ha area set aside for a technology transfer/business incubator. The plot is publicly owned, with Vilnius University having the right to use the plot. A good public transport system ensures convenient links with Vilnius city’s other districts.

Modern labs and tools

In terms of investments, outdated infrastructure will be replaced with modern equipment and buildings, including high-technology equipment for R&D work and for setting up common open-access laboratories, enabling research to be carried out in line with international standards and requirements, at the same time meeting skill standards in the private sector. This will contribute to greater opportunities for developing and introducing more innovation in research. In total, some 24 pieces of R&D equipment will be acquired and 24 laboratories upgraded.

This upgrade effort is expected to lead to more intensive R&D activities in the chosen fields, more active participation in wider European R&D programmes, and further commercialisation and integration into the wider Saulėtekis Science Valley Development Programme, linking business and science. In addition, the NCPTS will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of growing high and medium-high technology companies in Lithuania, contributing to the broader socio-economic development of the country.
