Czech Republic’s I/11 road relocated

Two sections of the Czech Republic’s I/11 road between the villages of Nebory, Oldřichovice and Bystřice have been relocated. The road is located in the Moravian-Silesian region, close to the town of Trinec and the Polish and Slovak borders. Phase one of the project was supported by EU funding under the 2007-2013 programming period.

The Nebory-Oldřichovice-Bystřice stretch of the I/11 has a total length of about 11 km, of which the section from Nebory to Oldřichovice accounts for 4.86 km and that from Oldřichovice to Bystřice for 6.239 km. It is a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.

The I/11 is a major link between the Czech Republic’s D48 expressway and Slovakia’s D3 motorway. The section covered by the project is also part of the Trans-European Transport Network. The work should increase the capacity of the road, improve safety, and cut journey times along with operating costs, noise levels and exhaust emissions.

Road structures, bridges and walls

The relocation of the I/11 meant that 22 other roads had to be moved (totalling 8.733 km in length), and the construction of 14 bridges on the I/11 along with 11 on other roads. Three junctions had to be built. It also involved the relocation of utilities, and technical, safety and environmental protection measures.

Phase one began with site preparation, surveying works and demolition of a bridge over the Tyra river, followed by earthworks for the relocations of the I/11 and the affected lower category roads. This included stripping and removal of topsoil and leaf litter, excavation of road cuttings and work on embankments. Culverts were also installed.

Pillar foundations were laid for bridges, the bridge superstructures were concreted, pre-tensioned to strengthen them and grouted, and steel structures and expansion joints were fitted. Further work took place on the foundations and superstructures of retaining walls and noise protection barriers, including installation of steel components and protection against corrosion.

Re-routing of utilities

Water supply infrastructure was relaid involving earthworks, assembly and laying of pipes, load and pressure tests and interconnection. The installation of drainage and sewage systems entailed trench excavation, laying of pipes and manholes, refilling of trenches, camera inspections, pressure tests, and excavation and fitting of a retention basin to manage storm water and prevent flooding. Adjustments to watercourses required the stripping of topsoil, laying of temporary flow piping and excavation along the new routes of the watercourses.

Earthworks, terrain adjustments and switching of connections were undertaken for overhead and underground power lines and a pipeline. Work on overhead lines also comprised installation of columns and pylons and fitting of new lines, while that on underground lines and the pipeline involved laying and protection of cables and pipes. Additional tasks included relocation of a war memorial and landscaping.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment of the first phase of the project “Road I/11 Nebory-Oldřichovice-Bystřice” is EUR 56 268 880, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 41 845 196 through the “Transport” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 programming period. The combined investment costs for both phases is EUR 163.8 million.
