New waste treatment facilities for Bulgarian capital
The 1.25 million people who live in Sofia are set to benefit from a major project which will deliver a modern, integrated municipal waste management system. The end result will go someway towards reaching national targets established to meet the requirements of EU waste legislation.
Overall, the project has two phases, which are technically dependent on each other. Phase one will provide the following:
- Construction of a landfill for non-hazardous bio-waste that has been pre-treated in a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant. The landfill at Sadinata will also be able to deal with waste from composting and material facilities based in Sofia. The 14 hectare site will have a total capacity of approximately 2 825 000 m3. This capacity will be rolled out in four cells, the first two of which are included in this phase of the project. These two cells will be able to cope with 390 000 m3 and 515 000 m3 of waste, equivalent to 32 % of the total landfill capacity.
- Construction of an installation at Han Bogrov, which can process 24 000 tonnes/year of separately collected green waste.
- Construction of a treatment facility at Han Bogrov for separately collected bio-waste, which will have a capacity of 20 000 tonnes/year.
This first phase also includes a pilot project for the separate collection of packaging waste in two residential districts of Sofia – Ovcha kupel and Kremikovci – as well as an upgrade of existing sorting facilities at the city’s Suhodol site. The project is expected to generate 70 jobs during implementation and will require 120 posts during the exploitation phase.
Construction of the MBT plant is earmarked for the second phase of the overall scheme. The design and technical characteristics of the plant will be determined by a feasibility study which aims to identify the best treatment options.
