Rail improvements between Palermo and airport
To enhance the public transport network and offer a greener alternative for locals, this project will double 16.57 km of rail tracks between La Malfa/EMS and Carini, part of the ‘Palermo – Punta Raisi airport’ line.
For both commuters and freight businesses, the benefits include better transport services, faster travel times, reduced road congestion, greater reliability and safety, and ultimately a boost for the local economy, including 541 jobs created in total.
Rail network linking up
Italy’s national rail network ‘Rete Ferroviaria Italiana’ (RFI) and its users are the main beneficiaries of this project. RFI manages the entire national network through a concession. The sections targeted by the current project are part of the EU Trans-European Network, Corridor I (Palermo-Berlino), and also feature in national and regional rail transport planning.
This project is part of a wider investment plan to double and upgrade tracks along the entire rail line Palermo – Punta Raisi airport: Section A runs from Palermo Centra/Brancaccio – Notarbartolo and includes works within Palermo's urban area; Section B covers Notarbartolo – EMS/La Malfa; and Section C, related to the current project, runs from EMS/La Malfa – Carini.
The costs of the works being carried out on all three sections total €901.9 million. The section Punta Raisi – Carini has already been doubled and operational since 2001. By 2016, the entire Palermo – Punta Raisi airport line should fully up and running.
Tracking the benefits
The 16.57 km stretch being doubled should generate many benefits for the local region, including increased capacity along the rail line as well as better services and reduced travel times for freight and passengers. Road congestion will be eased up, with a rebalancing of the use of different modes of transport in the area, in turn producing positive environmental effects. A significant reduction in the number of existing crossings should also contribute to greater reliability and safety on roads and tracks. A total of 11 level crossings will be removed (reducing the total number from 12 to 1).
