Centred around Nagykáta in the Tápió area of Pest county, the project will bring new or renovated infrastructure for sewage and wastewater treatment. Around 30 000 additional households will be linked to the network comprising 700 km of modern sewers.

Infrastracture overhaul

Under this project, a number of towns and villages in the region are to receive a new or enhanced sewage network. The investment will concentrate on Nagykáta, located 55 km east of Budapest, and include 18 other settlements dotted around this small town.

Four new wastewater treatment plants are to be installed and the capacity of Nagykáta’s existing wastewater treatment plant will be extended. A new regional composting plant will also be built.

Target population of 72 400

Over the duration of the project, the existing sewage network of Nagykáta and nearby Tápiószentmárton will be extended. A new sewage network will also be extended to 18 surrounding settlements: Bénye, Farmos, Jászfelsőszentgyörgy, Káva, Kóka, Mende, Pánd, Sülysáp, Szentlőrinckáta, Szentmártonkáta, Tápióbicske, Tápiógyörgye, Tápióság, Tápiószecső, Tápiószele, Tóalmás, Újszilvás, and Úri. Furthermore, around 360 remote houses will be fitted with closed septic tanks.

There will be around 464 km of trunk pipelines and 235 km of household connections. Care will be taken to ensure that measures do not harm local Natura 2000 sites, which form part of the EU’s network of nature-protection sites.

New wastewater treatment plants are to be installed in Szentlőrinckáta, Sülysáp, Tápiószentmárton, and Tápiószele. In Nagykáta, the existing wastewater treatment plant’s capacity will be increased to handle around 1 650 cubic metres per day. Lastly, a new regional composting plant will be erected in Nagykáta; it will dehydrate some 20 m3/day of sewage sludge.

When the project ends, a further 72 400 people will be served by the new wastewater collection and treatment systems. Besides improving wastewater services to the target population, the project will decrease local groundwater pollution thanks to the sewage extension. The four new wastewater treatment plants will also improve water quality across the Tápió area. A further boost will come from the direct creation of more than 150 jobs during the project’s implementation phase.

Total and EU funding

The project “Wastewater Collection and Treatment for the Tápió Region” has a total eligible budget of EUR 106 424 700, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 76 096 200 for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
