Peloponnesus welcomes significant road repairsThe reconstruction of a 10.2 km stretch of motorway aims at boosting accessibility to Peloponnesian rural areas. With the works come reduced travel times and improved safety for motorists.
The project involves the reconstruction of a 10.2 km part of the Korinthos – Tripoli – Kalamata motorway.
A mammoth reconstruction
The works are directly benefiting all motorway users in the area and building on the success of a previous project, the Korinthos-Tripoli-Kalamata concession, which is one of the most important on-going Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects of the country with a total length of 205 km. The PPP is also expected to bring significant economic generation and population growth to the Central and Southern Peloponnese region.
The new stretch changes the routing of the initial road and brings with it additional security measures to make it 100 % operational. Various bridges and tunnels have also been constructed as part of the overall project.
These include a valley-bridge, cut and cover tunnel, a half-cover, a metallic bridge and a bridge of three openings. In addition, a reinforced embankment and pile walls are present and serve the purpose of enhancing safety and reducing noise pollution.
Better conditions for drivers
Various benefits come with the new and improved road conditions, including reduced travel times and distance as well as less operational costs for both passenger and goods vehicles. Due to higher safety standards, an overall reduction of accidents and loss of life is foreseen.
The new stretch of road is part of the Trans-European Transport Network, the so-called TEN-T programme. However, it is technically and financially independent from the TEN-T.
It is estimated that 1 519 jobs will be directly created during the period of construction of this section, while 165 will be maintained during its operational lifetime.
