Upgrade of the Berlin Ring heralds better city access

Expansion of the Berlin motorway ring road will bring new momentum to one of the most dynamic and celebrated cities in Europe.

The project will add two new lanes to an existing four-lane motorway on the northern ring of Berlin, improving accessibility to the city for visitors, commuters and business traffic, at the same time as cutting congestion and transport pollution. Access between Berlin and its surrounding hinterland will be streamlined along this crucial route to and from Potsdam.

An all-round winner

The six-lane expansion of the national motorway A10, the Berlin Ring, is essential as the existing infrastructure can no longer cope with the increasing volume of traffic in the Brandenburg area. The reconstruction project will bring several clear benefits. Perhaps most obviously, better roads will mean better road access and less congestion, bringing better road safety and a reduction in accidents.

The reduced travel times and improved access to the Berlin metropolis will be good for business, enhancing the city’s competitiveness and the economic interdependence between Berlin and its surrounding areas. Commuter traffic and heavy goods vehicle traffic will particularly benefit from the new motorway ring road.

In addition, the smoother circulation of traffic will cut energy use and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to energy conservation and bringing environmental benefits.

Ringing the changes

The six-lane expansion of the northern Berlin Ring national motorway A10 involves the reconstruction of 5.4 km of the A10 and A24 motorways, as well as 5.3 km of connecting ramps and slip roads.

A central part of the project, the motorway expansion along the A10 and A24 on the Havelland motorway interchange, will include the construction of the new Kremmen junction and the extension and reconfiguration of existing junctions, to accommodate the foreseen modification of traffic flows.

Earlier extensions to the east and south of the Berlin Ring have been in place since 1990, so it is intended that the new works will bring the northern section up to a similar standard and capacity as the rest of the motorway ring road.

93 direct jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase alone, with a further 29 jobs in place when work is completed.
