Tunnel shows the way to rapid, safe journeys

Greater capacity, faster traffic speed and enhanced security for passengers and goods in Leipzig is the result of new construction and renovation work carried out on underground links.

The main components of the project are four underground transport stations, railway equipment for the tunnel, technical connections to the existing network and measures to avoid or reduce and compensate for adverse effects on the environment and surrounding landscapes.

Secure basis for future growth

The organisation in charge of carrying out this project is DB Netz AG, Zentrale. It plays a key role in ensuring that the Leipzig city tunnel continues to be a core element of the railway system in the Leipzig/Halle urban area, today and further down the line.

The main beneficiaries of the new system are those residing in the city of Leipzig (507 000 inhabitants), adjacent districts (399 000 inhabitants) and the city of Halle (236 000 inhabitants), notably commuters who use local passenger rail transport. The regional economy also has gains to be made, especially the services and retail sectors, given the volume of passenger traffic moving through. As for employment, the construction phase has seen 235 direct jobs created, another 264 in long-term positions.

Station designs recognised

Four underground traffic thoroughfares were the focus of the works. The design features and construction solutions for the Markt, Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and Bayerischer Bahnhof stations are award-winning designs following architectural competitions held prior to work beginning. The upgrading has included interior shells, spatial-partitioning extensions, platform furnishings, heating, ventilation and sanitary measures, electrotechnical and telecommunications equipment, and escalator and lift systems.

People on the move 

Following the work, the time saved travelling has equated to about 2.78 million hours annually as a result of the improved and direct accessibility of Leipzig city centre. The burden on the road network in the area also has the potential to reduce by some 42.7 million car kilometres per year as a result of the city railway system based on the tunnel concept. Furthermore, users of the long-distance links Karlsruhe – Stuttgart – Nuremberg – Leipzig/Dresden and Berlin – Leipzig – Nuremberg are also maknig noticeable savings in travel times.
