Traffic links connect for smooth transport
This transport project will see the construction of a new four-lane, 20.4 km long stretch of motorway between Rathensdorf and Borna in Germany, giving local motorway users as well as foreigners (mainly from Poland and the Czech Republic) better connections, greater accessibility and reduced travel times.
The economic and environmental spin-offs will also be significant and include the creation of long-term direct jobs, more cost-effective transport routes for products and materials, and dramatic drops in CO2 emissions.
Accessibility comes to Saxony
The motorway section (Rathensdorf – Borna) of this project is part of a larger-scale project in Saxony, namely the development of the A72 stretch of motorway between Chemnitz and Leipzig which serves both as a long distance road connection and as a local relief road. Upon the expected project completion date of May 2011, the safety, quality and accessibility of the roads will have been vastly improved between the main centres of Halle/Leipzig and Chemnitz/Zwickau as well as the regional centres of Limbach, Oberfrohna, Borna and Altenburg.
In addition to the 20.4 km of road construction from Rathensdorf to Borna, the works carried out under this project include 27 engineering structures covering a total length of 1 270 m.
Driving economic growth
The European metropolitan region dubbed the ‘Saxony triangle’, namely Dresden, Halle/Leipzig and Chemnitz/Zwickau, is expected to witness important developments in terms of commerce, in parallel with the new traffic link developments. This will provide an added boost to businesses as well as the generation of 245 direct jobs – 96 during the implementation phase and 149 during the operational phase. Each job created is expected to last an average period of eight years.
The green side of road construction
Environmental concerns feature among the top priorities of major projects across Europe. This project is no exception – there will be positive ecological impacts once the project is completed, as traffic volume is shifted from built-up areas on to the access roads of the A72. The high-quality, efficient infrastructure, combined with the impact of this shift to the four-lane motorway will see levels of energy consumption cut markedly. Estimates show that annual CO2 emissions should drop by some 7 900 tonnes, a sign of greener days ahead for the region’s inhabitants and its natural environment.
