Efficient, safe and sustainable transport at seaEfficienSea is transforming the Baltic Sea region into a leading example of maritime safety and security.
As a strategic project of the Baltic Sea Region Programme, EfficienSea plays an essential role in addressing the serious issues of maritime safety and accident response. At the same time, EfficienSea is a flagship project of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, the first EU macro-regional strategy of its kind.
A driving force for maritime safety
EfficienSea is a collaborative effort amongst 16 partners from across six countries in the Baltic Sea region. The project aims to improve maritime safety and the environmental state of the region via concise and coordinated actions. Together, the team of national and regional authorities and research institutes develop and implement tools to ensure safe, sustainable and efficient traffic at sea.
EfficienSea’s ambitious tools primarily focus on emerging innovations in e-Navigation, a concept that is revolutionising maritime safety by reducing information overflows and simplifying navigation. The result is a system that makes processing and disseminating maritime data and information more efficient.
Within this framework, EfficienSea is also creating a plethora of related services, including tools capable of simulating the effects and risks of increased maritime traffic. In addition, the project is implementing numerous awareness campaigns aimed at enhancing the attractiveness of maritime careers among young people.
EfficienSea is already achieving results. The programme has developed prototypes for various e-Navigation services and acts as the testing area for their use. To address recruitment challenges, the programme has developed a common trainee programme that includes a series of seminars, workshops, videos and social media platforms. Further, the programme is developing an innovative Automatic Identification System tool that facilitates a more precise tracking of ship movements.
"EfficienSea is one of the most important projects in the Baltic Sea region, ensuring the safety of both those who use the sea and the surrounding maritime environment."
