Major rail upgrade for a better quality service

Modernisation of the rail network in a Czech region is improving the quality of rail transport, and reducing journey times, as well as bringing economic benefits.

Additional tools

Thanks to this investment scheme that was finalised mid-2014, the condition of railway track, along with related buildings and equipment, to the west of the city of Plzeň has been improved. The line is located on the Plzeň to Cheb section of the 3rd national transit railway corridor and is part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

A stretch of over 4 km of track has been reconstructed, along with the modernisation of telecommunications, safety and signalling gear. Existing railway bridges have been either rebuilt or replaced, and noise protection barriers have been erected. In addition, a new platform was constructed at Plzeň-Jižní předměstí station.

On track for improved rail punctuality

The main objective of the initiative, which is part of a wider programme along with eight other related projects between Plzeň and Cheb, was to improve the quality of rail transport. Another aim was to ensure the network complies with the requirements of EU legislation and international interoperability agreements. Other benefits include an increase in time savings in rail transport which, in monetary terms, are valued at EUR 1 115 938 per year.

Reducing the potentially-harmful environmental impact of rail transport is another objective to be achieved, along with improved safety. Moreover, increasing the capacity of the line, the project has enabled train speed to rise by up to 120 km/h. The scheme also helped the local economy with the creation of ten new jobs.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project "Passage through railway junction Plzeň in direction of 3rd TRC" is EUR 60 194 673, of which the EU´s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 32 175 776 from the Operational Programme "Transport" for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority axis "Upgrading and Development of the TEN-T Railway Network".
