EU investment puts Czech rail network on right track

The upgrade of a rail line in Moravia-Silesia region will help support the modernisation of the Czech railway system and bring it in line with EU standards.

The main purpose of this scheme is to modernize an 11.5 km stretch of railway line between the Czech and Slovak state border and Český Těšín in the Eastern part of the Moravia-Silesia region. The project seeks to ensure that the "technical" condition of the rail tracks and related buildings and equipment are all in accordance with EU standards. Telecommunication and signalling equipment will also be improved along with traction lines. Once completed, the speed limit on the track will rise from 120 to 160 km/h.

The overall investment scheme is made up of four separate rail improvement projects. These are designed to help complete priority routes that make up the so-called Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) to make the Czech Republic more accessible and attractive as a location for business, investment and tourism, as well as making travel easier for ordinary citizens. These projects are part of the Czech III national railway corridor.

Benefiting both citizens and the economy

By helping to modernise the rail network, there will be clear benefits for passengers in terms of transport safety and reduced journey times for citizens who are expected to find travel easier both within the region, and across the country and beyond. It is hoped that in turn this ease of travel will make the Czech Republic more attractive for investors and businesses with beneficial consequences for the development of its regions and their economies. The increased travel speed will bring time savings of approximately EUR 1.66 million per year.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project "Optimisation of the Bystřice nad Olší – Český Těšín railway line" is EUR 158 374 151, of which the EU's Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 84 301 151 from the Operational Programme “Transport” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period, under the priority “Modernisation of the TEN-T railway network”.
