Sofia’s metro to be extended through huge engineering scheme

Sofia’s underground transport network is set for a major upgrade after stage two of a project to extend the metro was given the green light.

Additional tools

Construction work during this stage will be divided into two geographically and technically distinct lots.

Lot 1 is for a 4.2 km extension of metro line 2 between Obelya RD and Nadezhda road junction, 2.3 km of which will be underground and 1.3 km above ground. Work will include the construction of four metro stations called Lomsko Shose, Beli Dunav, Nadezhda and Han Krum. In addition, a parking zone for 600 vehicles will be built under Lomsko Shose boulevard. Lot 1 also provides access to the metro train depot in the Obelya quarter.

Lot 2 provides for a 2.5 km extension of line 1 between Mladost I RD and Tsarigradsko Shose boulevard, including a 2.2 km tunnel section. Two stations will be built – Mladost III and Tsarigradsko Shose – and a parking area will be provided for 1 300 vehicles.

Infrastructure for both lots includes tunnels between stations, rail tracks and electrical supply systems, as well as all the necessary security, speed control and communications systems. The project also sets aside funding for the purchase of 18 metro trains.

City-wide benefits

The extension will bring the metro within reach of an additional 190 000 residents. However, all of Sofia’s citizens will reap the benefits of the new lines through reduced travel times and reductions in CO2 emissions. The overarching goal is to make the metro Sofia’s main transport system, allowing for better connection with European, national and local transport networks – particularly with the railway network.

About 1 100 jobs will be created during implementation. When the work is complete, the Metro Company expects to hire a further 251 permanent staff to cope with the extended services.

Stage one of the overall project is currently under construction and provides for a 6.5 km extension of line 2, complete with seven stations between Nadezhda road junction and Cherni Vrah boulevard. Further extension plans will see the completion of Line 1 from Tsarigradsko Shose boulevard through Druzhba RD to Sofia International Airport.

All stages of the Sofia Metro Extension Project are technically and financially independent of each other.

Total and EU funding

The project “Sofia Metro Extension Stage II ‘Obelya – Nadezhda’ and ‘Mladost І – Tsarigradsko Shose’” has a total eligible budget of EUR 281 161 250, with the EU’s Cohesion fund contributing EUR 200 000 000 for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
