The ERDF-funded MD.Net project is helping to create SMEs with a focus on the Mediterranean diet, while promoting cross-border cooperation and scientific research among the nine partner countries.

The project aims to boost sustainable development across the region by encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, particularly among people in rural areas, around the theme of the Mediterranean diet.

The term refers to the culture, skills and traditions involved in producing and consuming the region’s food. UNESCO included the diet in its List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.

Project activities will include workshops and the sharing of scientific knowledge and research into the diet which is high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and olive oil but low in meat and dairy foods.

Italy’s Campania region is leading the effort, which has a budget of EUR 3.7 million. Private and public organisations in Portugal, Croatia, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain, Slovenia, Albania, and Cyprus are also participating.
