Thousands of photographs capturing over a decade of history in three regions of Austria and Italy have a new home online, thanks to the Interreg-funded project Lichtbild ¬Kulturschatz Historische Photographie.

The project created an online, freely accessible archive of over 12 000 photographs from the Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino regions dating from the 1890s to the 1990s. The photos come from public institutions, archives and professional and amateur photographers.

One of the main aims was to stimulate people’s interest in historical photos and how to preserve them.

Four exhibitions were held during the project’s three-year run, two of them online at www.lichtbild-argentovivo.eu. The other two, Platz Da! (2018) and Images of Women (2019) were held in Lienz, Bruneck, Innsbruck and Bolzano. The latter exhibition was also staged in Trento.

Experts from Austria, Italy, Germany and Switzerland led workshops to teach people about photographic law and creative commons and how to handle, store and digitise historical photographs. An e-learning course on these topics was also developed.

The images can be downloaded for free and used commercially, with credits.
