Boosting Growth and Cohesion in EU Border Regions, Drama, 25 October 2018
The European Commission, Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, is organising, in cooperation with the Drama Chamber of Commerce, the workshop "Boosting Growth and Cohesion in EU Border Regions", which will take place on 25 October 2018 in Drama.
This workshop is the fourth of a series of decentralised events that follow the adoption on 20 September 2017 of the European Commission's Communication"Boosting Growth and Cohesion in EU Border Regions".
Cross-border regions are sometimes presented as the laboratories of European integration. Enhancing interactions across those borders promotes the socioeconomic development of those regions by reducing the obstacles that companies and people still face in their daily activities. The potential is great: "if only 20% of the existing obstacles were removed, border regions would still gain 2% in GDP. (…) with potential for over 1 million jobs" (COM (2017)534, pp: 4)
One important lesson learnt is that promoting cross-border cooperation is not just a matter of funding. Engaging stakeholders at all levels (local, regional, national and European) is essential. Sharing experiences and learning from existing practices is key to success. Joint efforts to identify and solve existing legal and administrative obstacles that hamper cooperation are needed.
The workshop will gather representatives from the European Commission, national, regional and local authorities and stakeholders, mainly from South-Eastern Europe. The purpose is to share the knowledge gained with the Communication, inform about the new tools being proposed by the Commission and establish new links between participants.
Simultaneous interpretation is provided from/to English, Greek, Bulgarian and Romanian.
