Teaming means institution building. Teaming projects create new or update existing centres of excellence in Widening countries through a coupling process with a leading scientific institution. The programme has two phases: in Phase 1, funding is provided to develop a business plan for the future centre in line with the host region's smart specialisation strategy. In Phase 2, selected Phase 1 proposals receive financial support to start implementing the future centre.
"The funding provided to our PlantaSYST Consortium during Teaming Phase 1 enabled us to consolidate our vision for a state-of-the-art centre of plant systems biology and biotechnology, taking the best from our German and Bulgarian partners. In preparing the business plan for the new Centre of Excellence we strengthened cooperation between consortium partners and created new links with research entities in Europe and overseas." Tsanko Gechev, Coordinator of PlantaSYST in Bulgaria

"Thanks to the Teaming Phase 1 project the University of Primorska was able to build strong relationships with both the Slovenian project partners as well as with the Fraunhofer Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut, our advanced partner. Our project partners and industry stakeholders helped us develop our second stage proposal, our business plan, and raised the profile of our research areas within Slovenia's Smart Specialisation Strategies. Throughout this project we were also able to attract interest and support from research institutions, industrial partners, and policy makers across the globe. All of our project partners were excited to participate in this project and feel proud of what we produced." Andreja Kutnar, Coordinator of InnoRenew CoE in Slovenia
