From CYBERHAND FET project to real applications: the bionic hand!
FET Proactive helps new research communities to be developed by encouraging researchers from different disciplines to work together on new technologies in specific domains.

In addition to research, FET Practive activities also include:

  • generating a research roadmap for the area,
  • developing appropriate educational materials, and
  • disseminating results to raise the general awareness of the new technology benefits.

In the Work Programme 2014-2015, FET Proactive consists of 3 initiatives under the "Emerging themes and communities" call, and for a fourth one, under the dedicated "Towards exascale high-performance computing" call, implementing part of the HPC strategy elaborated in the context of the HPC Public-Private Partnership by ETP4HPC.
 

Emerging Themes and Communities

Following a public consultation during 2012-2013, the following 3 topics have been selected for inclusion in the 2014-15 work programme. The related call closed on 01/04/2014, learn more about the 13 selected projects.


'Global Systems Science' (GSS)

GSS aims to help integrate the abundance of data on social, economic, financial, technological, and ecological systems available today and elaborate societal responses across policy domains and cross-cutting authorities.

This will result in radically improve the way in which scientific knowledge can stimulate, guide, and help evaluate policy and societal responses to global challenges like climate change, global financial crisis, global pandemics, and growth of cities – urbanisation and migration.


'Knowing, doing and being: cognition beyond problem solving'

The goal is to establish new foundations for future robotics and other artificial cognitive systems with clear progress beyond current capabilities and design concepts.

This initiative aims at renewing ties between the different disciplines studying knowledge, cognition and related issues (e.g., embodiment, , development, insight, identity, responsibility, culture…) from various perspectives (e.g., neural, physical, social, ecological), to artificial cognitive systems beyond the level of dull task execution or repetitive problem solving.

This should establish new foundations for future robotics and other artificial cognitive systems with clear progress beyond current capabilities and design concepts.
 

'Quantum simulation'

This initiative challenges the research community to develop solutions using quantum technologies that will ultimately address real world problems, with a potential for disruptive change. It focuses on quantum simulation to address problems that are fundamentally beyond the reach of classical computing, e.g. in quantum materials science or the life sciences.
 

It is expected that once a topic is sufficiently mature, research in the area will be transferred to the LEIT or Societal Challenges sections of Horizon 2020. Topics for FET Proactive are predefined in the Work Programme.

 

High-Performance Computing

The 'Towards Exascale High-Performance Computing' topic aims to deliver a broad spectrum of extreme scale High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and to develop a sustainable European HPC Ecosystem.

The report presents the outcomes & discussions from our 3rd FET2020 Conference held in Budapest(Hungary 26/06/2014, and which had the objective of discussing aspects related to increasing the engagement and participation within FET projects in Horizon 2020. Of particular interest was how to increase participation of both the scientific and industrial communities of those Member States with a relatively low participation rate in FET projects in FP7, namely the majority of the EU13 Member States. The COFET project aims to support the future development of the FET programme within Horizon 2020 based on a dialogue between science, policy, industry and society. Three conferences will address three different topics, with this report presenting the outcomes and discussions from our Conference held in Pisa, Italy on the 30th and 31st January 2014, and which was focused on all aspects of outreach and stakeholder engagement. The ultimate objective was to move FET projects, and potentially the FET Programme, beyond the traditional view of dissemination and towards a more holistic value driven view encompassing outreach, engagement and citizen science. Today (5 December 2014) the European Union and Switzerland signed a comprehensive international agreement associating Switzerland to parts of Horizon 2020, Research and Training Programme of Euratom and the ITER project. This will see Switzerland participate in project consortia in eligible programmes on an equal footing with EU Member States, while financially contributing to these programmes with an estimated €400 million until the end of 2016. This is why €2.7 billion will be invested in Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) under the new research programme Horizon 2020 (2014-2020).
