FET Flagships

Flagships are visionary, science-driven, large-scale research initiatives addressing grand Scientific and Technological (S&T) challenges. They are long-term initiatives bringing together excellent research teams across various disciplines, sharing a unifying goal and an ambitious research roadmap on how to achieve it.

FET Flagships will establish Europe as the leader in their specific domains and a pole of attraction for international cooperation; they will nurture creativity, flair and talent, attracting the best minds all over the world and creating the skilful multi-disciplinary researchers Europe needs.
By leading, inspiring and integrating efforts, Flagships become a new partnering model for long-term European collaborative research in the context of the European Reseach Area (ERA).

Eventually, Flagships will:

  • turn scientific advances into concrete innovation opportunities, growth and jobs,
  • contribute to addressing some of the major societal challenges Europe is facing.

FET Flagships are expected to run for about 10 years, with a total budget of around 1 billion Euros. They will bring together a large number of research organisations, including academia, large industry and SMEs. This bold investment cannot be carried out alone by the Commission or any single Member State. It requires establishing a close link between related activities at European, national and regional levels and ensuring a mutual reinforcement from the Commission and the Member States of the research activities that contribute to the Flagship.

The Running projects in H2020

In October 2013 the European Commission, under its Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7), launched two FET Flagship projects: Graphene and The Human Brain Project (HBP).
The last Flagship call closed on 10th June 2014.
Currently there are no other funding opportunities planned in 2014 and 2015.

The European Commission published  in September 2014 the FET Flagship Staff Working Document, announcing the implementation model for the Flagships in H2020 (overview and presentation).


Graphene, the first available two-dimensional carbon-based material, has a great potential to underpin new disruptive technologies, substituting materials used in existing applications but also leading to radically new markets and applications. The Flagship aims to take graphene and related layered materials from the realm of fundamental science to industrial and societal applications in the space of ten years. The Flagship will establish a new technology platform that will leverage the advantages of these materials as compared to silicon.

Major technological impacts are expected in:

  • flexible electronics,
  • high-frequency electronics,
  • novel logic devices,
  • novel spintronic devices, and also
  • in domains far beyond ICT.

Novel composites, more efficient batteries and new types of sensors are examples of technologies that will benefit from graphene and related materials in a variety of fields of deployment: from energy to automotive technologies, and from chemical processes to aerospace.

The initial Consortium brings together 75 academic and industrial research groups from 17 European countries. Four Nobel Laureates are participating in the Flagship. The Consortium covers areas from quantum physics, material science and chemistry to electronics, engineering and device production.

The humain brain project

Understanding the human brain is one of the greatest challenges facing 21st century science. Using ICT-based facilities the Human Brain Project (HPB) FET Flagship aims to provide researchers worldwide with ICT tools and mathematical models for sharing and analysing large brain data they need for understanding how the human brain works and for emulating its computational capabilities.

This Flagship initiative was launched in 2013 and is supported by the European Union. The HBP has the potential to revolutionise the future of neuroscience, medicine, and computing.

The HBP gathers a large consortium of 112 partner organisations, mostly from Europe but also from the USA, Japan, and China and involves world leading experts. It is a multidisciplinary consortium which includes experts in computer science, neuroscience, robotics, micro-electronics, and also in innovation and exploitation, ethics, education, programme management and communication.

The FLAG-ERA project gathers representatives from ministries and research funding organisations in Europe's Member States and Associated Countries with the goal of defining and jointly implementing activities supporting the two FET Flagship initiatives.

FLAG-ERA provides a framework for its members to come together and coordinate their activities to:

  • identify and/or fund researchers and projects relevant to the Flagships, and
  • put money on a common pot and launch calls for projects that enable researchers from different countries to propose joint projects in support of the Flagships.

FLAG-ERA and the two flagship projects, Graphene and HBP, work closely on the definition of areas and topics of mutual relevance.
