Horizon 2020
The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation

Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine, Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy - Work Programme 2018-2020 preparation

Preparation of the work programme 2018-2020 for Societal Challenge 2 started end of 2015, involving various stakeholder engagement activities and consultations.

Preparations for the last work programme started at the end of 2015. They take into account the political priorities of the European Union and refer to several foresight exercises.

Consultation of stakeholders has been an integral part of this programming process which is managed as a participatory process. In this respect Societal Challenge 2 particularly considers the following inputs:

  • Advisory group report: The advisory group started to work on programming for 2018/2020 in February 2016. Building on the outcomes of their work for 2016/2017, they delivered their report in summer 2016.

  • Stakeholder consultation: a consultation questionnaire was made available on-line from 06.06.2016 to 28.08.2016. Contributions were especially expected from stakeholder organisations including SC2 relevant European Technology Platforms, Joint Programming Initiatives, European Research Area Networks (ERANETs), European Innovation Partnerships, science organisations, industry organisations. Results were assembled in a report which was finalised in September 2016.
  • Strategic approach to EU agricultural research and innovation: a large participatory process was launched in June 2015 to elaborate a long-term strategy for EU agricultural research and innovation. This strategy is an important input into the programming process -final paper.
The content of the strategy builds on:
  • AGRI Research workshops: in addition to workshops organised for preparation of work programme 2016-2017, many of which provided outcomes which are also relevant for 2018-2020, specific working sessions are organised to deepen the gap analysis and formulate research questions with key selected experts.
