Programme: Europe for Citizens
Identifier: 575913-CITIZ-1-2016-1-LT-CITIZ-CIV
Title: The Road of the Citizen in the Mirror of History
Summary
The aim of the project is to foster dialogue between different generations, which would help to reveal the importance of rights and freedoms guaranteed by the EU, to compare life in the EU and former repressive systems, to encourage citizens to be more conscious about freedoms and rights granted by the EU, spread them and be ready to defend them. It is a continuation of the project "The Road of the Citizen", supported by Europe for Citizen programme of the European Union, 2013. We continue with what proved to be the most important and effective (method of Forum theatre, Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, most reliable partners). We also include new countries, activities and perspectives, which motivate to see the importance of EU values more clearly and to defend them. New aspect in this project is the attention to the past, as the participating countries come from repressive backgrounds (Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, other repressive regimes). Young people tend to think that all the rights are just given to them, do not value them. There are aggressive movements of Eurosceptics. What is often forgotten is that just a few decades ago these rights were roughly violated, independent thinking was repressed and moral standards were presented as a law, different choices were punished (e.g., homosexuality). Therefore in this project young people will interview the old ones, gather stories about their experiences of violations of Human rights in former repressive systems, will also interview experts who will comment on how these rights now are granted by the EU, will talk to people of their age about what would happen with their lives if these rights were taken away from them. The filmed material from different countries will be assembled to make a coherent story and presented in public events in all participating countries together with performance of Forum theatre, which proved to be powerful in initiating active discussions and emotional involvement.
