Title: Meeting Memories: Learning from the Past to Confront Dehumanization Today
Summary
The project aims to raise awareness on the process of dehumanization that led to the “othering” and the extermination of different social groups (Jews, Roma, LGBTQI community..) during the 1930s and 1940s. We believe that similar patterns of dehumanizing propaganda are repeated today and that is important to explain, especially to young people, their causes and consequences. The project will focus on the Nazi and Fascist regimes but will connect them with nowadays reality and with the migrant crisis. The project's main objective is to raise youth and citizens’ awareness about patterns of dehumanization, scapegoating and “othering”, to make them more aware, more resilient, more capable to be critical towards authoritarianism and populism and less prone to racism and radicalization. Specific objectives are: educate citizens about totalitarian regimes and their crimes; raise awareness about the causes and consequences of totalitarian regimes; promote peace and tolerance; support intercultural and inter-generational dialogue; support the process of reconciliation; promote common European values. The activities focus on two main questions: “How was it possible that such terrible dehumanization took place between the 1930s and 1940s?” and “What, if anything, have we learned?”. BiH, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Serbia, Slovenia. The participants directly involved in the project will be 566, indirectly 10,000. Tangible results: exhibitions; photographs; comics; toolkit. Intangible: raise citizens’ awareness about the patterns that led to the dehumanization and the Holocaust; make the citizens aware of how similar patterns are used today; combat stereotypes and scapegoating; combat authoritarian and populist tendencies; promote the European Union and shared European values; support citizens to be more active on local and European level.
