Title: Memories and Democracy. The Spanish Civil War and the European totalitarian regimes.
Summary
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. This commemoration is one of the priorities of the program Europe for Citizens and a good chance to get back Spanish and European collective memories. Due to memory is always a conflict, we will refer to it in plural.Spanish Civil War was a precedent of the Second World War. That’s why this project wants to analyze the participation of some states in the Spanish conflict (Germany, Italy or Russia for example) and also the involvement of volunteers of many others countries grouped together in the International Brigades. Simultaneously, the project will promote a historiographic debate about the Spanish Civil War that will be used to study European totalitarianisms of the 1930’s and, also, the ones which lasted until 1989 in Eastern Europe. We will also analyze European policies of memory since the Spanish Civil War and how European citizens can participate on them to build a shared future. The project has no precedents and one of its main objectives is to create a European network that analyzes the places of memory. This network will be working until and during the commemoration of the beginning of the Second World War. This project promotes the following values:- Access to knowledge for everyone: Memories shouldn’t be in the hands of a few, they have to be able to flood the public space, to foment the citizenry involvement and to build a shared and varied memory. - Justice: By means of the memory of painful incidents, the project wants to promote the consciousness of solidarity and social justice. - Empowerment of public space: To make visible in the places of memory what it has been historically hidden, this also means an action of reparation. - Democracy and involvement: To emphasize the Public Administrations responsibility on memories management and how important is that the policies about memories are democratic and participatory.
